UnitedHealth Group To Roll Out Coronavirus Test To 46,000 Doctors Bruce JapsenSenior Contributor Healthcare
UnitedHealth Group will roll out a patient-administered test for the Coronavirus strain COVID-19 to 46,000 of its OptumCare physicians.
The nation’s largest health insurer, which owns the giant Optum health services company, has under its umbrella 46,000 OptumCare physicians who can provide a patient-administered test process UnitedHealth executives say is as effective as the current clinician-administered test process.
“We expect them, and many others, to begin to adopt this new testing process,” a UnitedHealth spokesman said Thursday morning of the 46,000 OptumCare doctors.
A study funded by UnitedHealth Group earlier this week shows people can self-administer a diagnostic test with a much smaller swab, a process that should save potentially thousands of clinicians from being exposed to the virus while at the same time making the testing simpler.
Researchers say such a self-administered process eliminates the need for the healthcare worker to be “up close to the patient” with patient protective equipment when the patient can merely swab their own nostril and had the test to the medical care provider.
The test is already being used in Seattle where doctors at an Optum-affiliated clinic have been using the self-administered method and led a study UnitedHealth Group released Wednesday.
“We know that broad, rapid and accurate testing is essential to addressing the COVID-19 crisis, yet the current clinician-administered process significantly limits testing capacity, puts frontline health care workers at risk of COVID-19 exposure, and is unpleasant for patients,” Dr. Yuan-Po Tu, an infectious disease expert at The Everett Clinic and the study’s lead author said. Everett Clinic is a part of OptumCare, the medical care provider business of UnitedHealth.

Pope Francis scheduled a three day tour of the United States which began September 24, 2015 with visits to Washington D.C. and New York City and then concluded in Philadelphia. His visit to New York City came after he addressed a Joint Session of Congress in Washington.
The highlights of the New York visit were a prayer service at the World Trade Center site and a mass at Madison Square Garden on Sept 25th. The trip was referred to as “A journey of faith through the heart of New York”.
Mr. Stamm was honored to be invited, and attended with New York City’s Public Advocate, Letitia James. He sat in the VIP seats located on the floor of the Garden. Other dignitaries in attendance included New York City Mayor, Bill DeBlasio , New York State Senate Majority Leader, John J. Flanagan, New York State Senator, Marty Golden, New York City Council Member, Dr. Mathieu Eugene, and New York City Comptroller, Scott Stringer.
Mr. Stamm described the pageantry, noting that “the Pope arrived in a mini Pope mobile, it was like a papal golf cart, and he drove around the sections of seating on the main floor. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York, accompanied the Pope around the floor as the he greeted the people.” Mr. Stamm said it was a very moving experience and was happy to have had the unique opportunity to see and welcome the Pope to NYC. Madison Square Garden with seating capacity of almost 20000 was the perfect location for the Mass.”

MedReview CEO, Joseph Stamm was invited to attend New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio’s State of The City Address. The event was held at Baruch College on February 3, 2015.
In reporting back to MedReview key staff, Mr. Stamm noted that he was very impressed by the Mayor’s presentation of the accomplishments of 2014, and his aggressive vision for 2015 and beyond. The Mayor termed it an “administration of action”. Mr. Stamm was also moved by the story told by the Mayor about his grandmother Anna Briganti, an immigrant from Italy and how she was able to realize the American Dream.
The Mayor stated that “dreams like his grandmothers are now in danger because it’s so tough to afford housing in the city.” The Mayor then announced that affordable housing would be the next front in his administration’s fight to lift up families and confront economic inequality. The thrust of his message was to ensure that there are affordable homes for New Yorkers of all means. He stated that housing must be affordable for new arrivals to New York City as well as for current residents striving to succeed. He then announced his vision is to build and preserve 200,000 affordable homes in the coming decade, and to protect veterans, seniors and tenants from predatory landlords, and support the growth with better infrastructure.
The Mayor went on to list the accomplishments of his first year in office which included:
- full-day pre-k for more than 50,000 of our kids.
- nearly doubled enrollment in after-school programs for middle school kids in all five boroughs.
- expanded living wage coverage to 18,000 workers.
