David A. Paterson, J.D.
David A. Paterson, former Governor of New York State and current SVP and Senior Advisor to the President and COO of Sands Las Vegas, Mr. Paterson joined NYCHSRO/MedReview’s Board in July 2017. He brings to the table a vast range of knowledge and experience spanning a three-plus-decade career in government, politics and business, as well as in law and broadcast news media.
In addition to his governorship from 2008 to 2010, Mr. Paterson served on the Board of the Metropolitan Transit Authority in 2012 and was Chairman of the New York State Democratic Party from 2014 to 2016. He has been a frequent drive-time talk radio host for WOR-AM and WNY-AM in New York City as well as a guest commentator on nationally broadcast news programs.
Among his other distinctions, in 1985 at age 31, he became the third youngest state senator in New York’s history when he was elected to represent Harlem; in 2002, he became the first African-American and blind person to serve as Minority Leader in the New York State Senate; and, in 2004, he addressed the Democratic National Convention.
As Governor, he demonstrated his insight and foresight into the challenges facing New York when he predicted the national fiscal crisis of 2008. His prescience spurred legislators to reduce the State’s deficit by billions of dollars and ultimately mitigated the financial devastation for New Yorkers during the nationwide collapse. The State not only kept its credit rating for the duration of his term, but Governor Paterson also succeeded in enacting legislation attaching severe criminal penalties for predatory lending as well as establishing a new budget process which has yielded on-time state budgets ever since.
A native New Yorker, he received his BA in History from Columbia University and his JD from Hofstra Law School.
